Grace Villamil – Blossoming Sci-Fi Serpents of Color

“With so many art fairs, openings and late night parties last week in NYC, FvF knows great art has a much longer effect than when it’s exhibited. At the Armory Arts Week, our good friend Grace Villamil, (who regularly shoots our NY friends and their apartments) showcased a new hidden talent at the lauded SpringBreak Artshow. The converted schoolhouse in NoLita is the first curator-driven art fair of its kind, and what the NY Times has called “bringing the art back downtown”.

Grace’s beautiful flower installation entitled “Ina (Mother)”, levitated and twisted like a powerful, colorful sci-fi serpent, bending towards the viewers and her miniature rock sculptures. It was included on the 3rd floor as part of up&coming curator Amanda Schmitt’s “Till Dust gathers on grass”. It left an impression with many visitors, fashion/art blogs and consequently might soon grace us - ;) - at an art space in Europe. This time we would love to see her flower work and photography in Berlin. You can check more of her work here.

2010 - 2012,130x75cm, prints 46x57cm
Dye on filter paper, water, webcam, laptop, table, loudspeakers

‘CHROME (live)’ is an installation that includes prints on filter paper, water, a webcam and complex colour analysis to create an extensive, yet still live performance. The work utilises the simple physical process colour chromatography, digital colour conversion and real-time sound generation to turn an edition of seemingly similar prints into individual artefacts.

Prints of black dots are soaked in water over an extended period of time. Slowly, the prints diffuse into their constituent parts creating brilliantly colourful new images.
The process is monitored by a web camera and is synthesized through a code, which converts the printed and diffused images into RGB values. According to the results of a complex colour analysis, three sine waves shape a chord and a continuous sound environment.

The process can take up to 12 hours for one print.

CHROME (live) is both a development process and tool. Since the first start of this work in 2010, the artists have shown it as an installation in different formats and conducted workshops with textile students, designers and media artists.
This current installation has been co-developed by the architect Maik Ronz and software developer Eric Brotto. During the development of CHROME, we have been kindly supported by The London Printworks Trust, Bergen National Academy of Arts, Culture Lab Newcastle and Bergen Centre of Electronic Arts.

The New World Center

The New World Center in Miami Beach, designed by Frank Gehry, opened to the public on 25 January 2011 as the home for the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy. The new campus features a 7,000 square-foot external projection wall used for art commissions and to broadcast the concerts live within an adjacent park, where a matrix of 4 high resolution projectors throw the image onto the wall.

Chronograph [Digital Mural]

Created for the exterior projection wall, this large-scale and site-specific installation takes its inspiration directly from the new structure and the surrounding historical art deco neighborhood of Miami Beach. Based on thousands of photographs taken over the course of the construction of the new hall and images of local architecture, the dynamic digital mural shifts between the recognizable and the abstract, animating and creating new forms on the building’s nighttime façade.

The mural is punctuated by hourly videographic events marking the top of each hour, and achieved by altering aspects of the work’s choreography - detail, pacing, palette, rhythm, geometry, and pattern. Custom-written software not only creates periodic cycles, but also generates an ever-changing visual experience over time for new and repeat visitors, regardless of the time, the day, or the season.

The Chronograph wall features 365 compositions and has been presented on New World Symphony’s façade from dusk to midnight since January 2011.

The Getty Center

This major new site-specific commission by Hirokazu Kosaka kicks off the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival and transforms the Getty Center’s Arrival Plaza into a sculptural and performative installation with an enormous spotlight, dancers, and hundreds of spools of colorful thread. In Sanskrit, kalpa means eon—a long period of time. Once every hundred years, an angel comes down from heaven and swipes the surface of a stone with her silk sleeves until the rock disappears. Kosaka builds a symbolic parallel between kalpa and the inevitable passage of time that slowly transforms our lives, histories, and memories.

Performers include Oguri, leads a small company of dancers; musician and composer Yuval Ron, who creates an aural environment with a combination of live and recorded music; and sounds featuring harmonica player Tetsuya Nakamaura.

Photos from Kalpa-
flickr.com/photos/iamuman/sets/72157629034504239/

Standing Wave is a kinetic sound installation that forms deeply layered and visceral patterns of sound and physical motion. In it a number of speakers and resonating objects are held aloft by a set of seven tall, flexible, motorized poles that arc and sway. The movements of these objects resemble both the waving of flags and the launching of catapults; the fluctuation of meaning that this implies is central to the reading of the piece. The sounds heard from the objects are sustained and complex tones that are linked to the shifts and changes in their movements. These tones comprise an undulating sound field that has a strong and tactile physical presence. The combination of kinetic, sonic, and visual elements creates an immersive environment in which the terrain of activity continually shifts and evolves in an organic manner.

The title, Standing Wave, describes the reflection and interference patterns created by sound waves as they dissipate their energy in an enclosed space – patterns that define the space acoustically as the patterns themselves are contoured by that same space. Here the title refers not only to the acoustic phenomenon that the piece, in part, explores, but as the movements in Standing Wave appear to oscillate between festivity and menace, it also serves as an allegory for the process and ambiguities of signaling at a distance

Kubiot (cubes) is a highly specialized media art installation performed in the Acco Theater Festival 2011.

This is a love story giving us a glimpse into one mans memories of his lost relationship. Different couples enter the building, each one from a different time and with a different vibe.

Just like any relationship, the good memories appear next to the bad ones, and like throwing the dice - the result of each couple is somewhat different.

For this production we built a studio size replica of the wall, with some interpretation. This was a fun playing ground for the actors, and also eventually evokes a unique interaction between the characters and the architecture.

by Orabnu: Orbanu.com
Concept: Yoav David, Lior Bentov and Yehontan Porat
Direction: Yoav David
Art director: Lior Bentov
Acting: Yehonatan Porat, Yael Finkel
Original Music: Alberto Schwartz
Sound Design: Binya Reches
Set Construction: Yaacov Gal
Compositing: Adam Lewinson

Shoutkast is an interactive installation, existing of a row of carton cupboards with drawers, of 1m80 high and 60 cm deep. The complete installation is seven meters long.

Every modular cupboard has seven carton drawers, each one with a cardholder with an ID number. These drawers open and close in a random order that is changing constantly, and when a drawer is open, it is up to the visitor to scream into it. After this is done, the scream will be saved into the drawer, and every time this drawer opens again, the sample of the scream will be heard again.

When another visitor screams loud enough into the same drawer again, the sample will be overwritten. There is always more than one drawer open simultaneously, so the more drawers that are loaded with sound, the bigger the chaos.

Shoutkast is a reaction on the contemporary culture of blogs and comments on the internet.

For more works please visit:

danielmaalman.com

This installation, Intersection, concentrates on the stop and go of the midtown traffic outside the gallery, focusing on the pulse and energy of the city. A hanging string column cycles between stillness and movement, while real time video sonograms and spectrograms are projected on to the gallery walls making the sound of the intersection visual.

Pat Badt and Scott Sherk have collaborated on several site-specific installations, shown at Katonah Museum of Art, the Kim Foster Gallery, Point, Line, Lafayette College, Marshall University and Martial Arts Center, Memphis. Pat Badt is a painter and a Professor of Art at Cedar Crest College. Scott Sherk is sculptor who often works with sound.
Collaboration with National Collective:
nationalcollective.com/2012/02/24/a-thoroughly-modern-girl/

Conceived as a piece of site specific work, A Thoroughly Modern Girl is part of an ongoing series of works to be installed in public spaces as a response to the multitude of dead space within urban Edinburgh. The works range from single boards to multiples carrying illustrative and text-based commentaries on their chosen site and surrounds.

In the case of this piece the site is the by now defunct, and much maligned, State Cinema on Great Junction Street, Leith. I have long admired this building’s façade as one of only a handful of examples of art deco architecture throughout the city.

The image of the girl was taken from an Escher woodcut (Girl With Flower) of the same period as the building (1930). At the core of this original work is a wistfulness and suggestion of transience, marked by the innocence of youth. She is shown in the height of fashion of the day, with bobbed hair and a geometric patterned dress akin to the avant-garde textiles of Sonia Delauney. The piece is contemplative in nature, with the underlying subtext of youth, beauty, longevity and mortality, symbolised through the use of a Spring flower.

I replaced the flower for a Saltire to have this wistful deco girl contemplate an idea, re-directing the viewer toward issues of national identity, whilst retaining the original idiom of transience through the choice of contemporaneous decaying venue.

Again, true to the original this work is a woodcut. Albeit scaled up by around 200%, the girl is cut from a single standard metric sheet of oak veneered 18mm MDF 2440mm x 1220mm. She is made entirely of vertical cuts (other than the flag) scored into the face of the board with an angle-grinder.

If the work were to be inked up you could take a print from her in the same manner as the original.

A Thoroughly Modern Girl has been exhibited at The Old Ambulance Depot, Edinburgh (2011) and recently she was successfully installed in her rightful home on Great Junction Street, in collaboration with National Collective.Click here to watch a short film of the installation.

She will be making a cameo appearance in my upcoming solo show “Out of Line”, as well as guest public appearances throughout the coming year in the cities of Scotland.
